Merseyside/Cheshire boxers dominated the day’s events at Alsop Leisure Centre in this regional NACYP battle as their North West Counties counterparts were shown no love on this quality Valentine’s Day show.
With the original schedule being trimmed down to 14 bouts due to injuries and withdrawals, the home side emerged victorious in nine contests and can consider themselves unfortunate not to have earned decisions in a couple more.
All eyes were on Stockbridge ABC big-hitter Tom Simpson (pictured above) who produced a miraculous comeback in the competition’s previous round when eliminating quality operator Ryan Mulcahy. Opposing Simpson’s power this time around was the equally classy Ryan Doyle.
Simpson began the contest with hurtful intent, a big right hand early on landed heavily on Doyle’s headguard and it appeared the in-form Simpson was heading for an early victory.
Doyle rallied well from the onslaught and even contributed some telling shots of his own as both young boxers entered the halfway stage with all still to play for.
The volume emerging from Simpson’s corner in between rounds was evidence of how close this contest was playing out, Simpson was using his superior strength to set up obvious attacks but when his opponent was in position nothing substantial came from the Stockbridge prospect.
Simpson improved significantly in the bout’s final session even registering a count as the tiring Doyle failed to match Simpson’s excellent fitness.
Ultimately, Simpson’s engine saw him clinch the judges’ verdict; however, he knows he has the skills and qualities to make his next battle a little easier.

It was a mixed day for Knowsley Vale ABC as two of their emerging stars opened and closed proceedings.
Tom Wilson got the day’s action underway and his pressure and accuracy was too much for Northside’s Mike Armstrong. Wilson picked apart his opponent from the opening bell as he used superb variety in attacking both Armstrong’s head and body.
Sadly, stablemate Brendan Kenwright was unable to join him in the competition’s next stage despite pushing Blackpool’s Adam Little to the limit.
Kenwright was well in control at the end of round two but an excellent last round for Little was just enough to see him awarded the spoils. This experience will have massive rewards for the improved Kenwright who certainly has the tools to deliver on this stage next time.
Everton Red Triangle’s Ray Moon sacrificed everything to earn his place in the tournaments next stage against Astley’s Andrew Fleming.
Moon was the victim of an accidental headbutt at the end of round one and was also inspected by the ringside doctor on more than one occasion.
With his high guard protecting his crimson face, Moon boxed brilliantly against his pressuring opponent to earn himself a well-deserved points win. Barring a reoccurrence of today’s injuries, Moon can certainly go far.
