NACYP’s Semi-Finals - Merseyside/Cheshire

Written by Chris Walker: Ringside

The Semi-Finals of the Merseyside/Cheshire NACYP’s was played out in front of an absorbed audience at Edinburgh Park Dockers Club.

Several high key members of Liverpool’s fight community were on hand to witness the region’s next generation and they will no doubt have been impressed with what was on display.  Steven Jennings, Derry Mathews, Anthony Bellew and Joseph Selkirk were just a few of the city’s boxing personalities in attendance to lend their support to their potential successors as Merseyside’s boxing scene continues to prosper.

Contest of the evening was the 57kg battle between Long Lane’s Jack Glover and Jake Smith, who was competing for Tower Hill.  The pace throughout this bout was fast and intense and despite the quick start enjoyed by Glover, Smith began to find his way into the bout.
Approaching the third session, the contest was evenly poised.  Glover was scoring well with some crunching body attacks whilst Smith was able to put together some eye-pleasing combinations.  The referee instructed both young boxers to stop as he tended to Smith’s nose which was bleeding profusely.  A second opinion from the ringside doctor was ordered and he informed the referee that the action could not continue.  The decision was a huge blow for Smith who will come again, but for Glover, it’s the Local Finals a week Sunday (31st January).

Another punishing duel was the 60kg war between Tom Buchanan and Ryan Mulcahy.  Rotunda’s Buchanan began the contest behind a neat jab before being dragged into a tear-up by the Long Lane puncher.  Both boxers exchanged hard hooks for the majority of the contest but the result was eventually decided by Mulcahy’s relentlessness.  A vicious right uppercut found its way to Buchanan’s target and following a count from the third man, the contest was halted.

Waiting for Mulcahy in the 60kg final will be the well supported Stockbridge boxer Tom Simpson.  Simpson, despite starting slow, delighted his vast amount of fans as he grinded down Bridgefoot’s Jordan West.  Simpson grew in stature as the bout went on and his supremacy was confirmed when the official stepped in at the start of round 4.  Simpson against Mulcahy has the makings of a classic.
