Merseyside/Cheshire Schoolboys Review

Written by Chris Walker: Ringside

Kirkby ABC dominated the day’s events at Walton Sports Centre as the 2010 Merseyside/Cheshire Schoolboy Championships got under way.

The famous club that delivered John Conteh and Paul Hodkinson to worldwide audiences were on fine form as no fewer than 4 of their boxers progressed to next Sunday’s final.  Bradley Strand, Tom Aitchison, Steve Ferguson and Anthony Beckett made it a clean sweep for the Knowsley outfit with the latter providing a brutal performance.

Beckett was on top throughout his contest against Huyton’s Adam Saxon and it came as no surprise to see the bout’s third man call a halt to proceedings halfway through the second round.  Beckett looked superb from the outset and his wide variety of attacks was too much for the game Saxon.  Beckett, on this form, should fear no one ahead of next week’s final.

Another impressive competitor was Rotunda’s ABC James Lunt who looks like he was bred purposefully for the famed Black and Gold vest.  Going up against Chester’s Josh Middlehurst, Lunt was in control from the bout’s beginning and he refused to give his opponent an entry into the contest.  Middlehurst remained brave despite the one-sidedness but his resolve was eventually wilted as the contest was stopped shortly into the final session.

The last time I saw tiny Andy Cain was last month at Everton Red Triangle’s club show.  There he got the better of Knowsley Vale’s Ryan Briscoe.  Today’s rematch saw the same result as Cain’s speed was a deciding factor in the outcome.  Briscoe competed better then in their first contest but Cain’s body attacks and quick combinations ensured that he was a worthy victor.
All finals to take place at Alsop High School next Sunday (24th January) Weigh in 10am.
